Cathedral city with industries (gloves,
shoes, Worcester sauce; Royal Worcester
porcelain from 1751) in Hereford and
Worcester, W central England, administrative
headquarters of the county, on the river
Severn; population (1985) 76,000. The
cathedral dates from the 13th and 14th
centuries. The birthplace of the composer
Elgar at nearby Broadheath is a museum. At
the Battle of Worcester 1651 Cromwell
defeated Charles I.
